  17. <p>A jury impaneled, the second L.A. police trial gets under way
  18. </p>

  20. <p>     "I'm ready to get this started," Pronounced Laurence M. Powell,
  21. one of four Los Angeles police officers accused of violating
  22. the civil rights of black motorist Rodney G. King. "We have
  23. to get it started to get it over with." Seven months after they
  24. were indicted by a federal grand jury and two years after King's
  25. infamous videotaped beating, Powell and his co-defendants finally
  26. began their day in federal court.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>     Opening statements by attorneys and the order of three dozen
  29. prosecution witnesses expected to testify over the next six
  30. to eight weeks suggest that the jurors will still be deciding
  31. the case on virtually the same information and arguments made
  32. by both sides in the first trial. The prosecution will contend
  33. that the officers violated police policy by hitting King in
  34. the head with batons and kicking him to make him comply with
  35. their commands. And the defense will continue to maintain that
  36. the officers' actions were "a managed and controlled use of
  37. force that followed L.A.P.D. policies, procedures and training."
  38. Despite new, enhanced versions of the videotape, the most eagerly
  39. awaited new source of evidence will be King himself, who did
  40. not testify in the state trial.
